Race naming conventions
Every D&D race has its own naming flavour — we've encoded the conventions from the 5e PHB, Mordenkainen's, Volo's, and Baldur's Gate 3:
- Dragonborn — multi-syllable, strong consonants, often a virtue-name (Bharash, Rhogar). Clan surname.
- Tiefling — Infernal or virtue names (Arkillian, Temerity, Mockery).
- Drow — flowing, often with apostrophes. Elvish roots twisted dark (Zak'nafein, Drizzt).
- Orc — short, harsh, gutteral (Gorak, Uruk, Thokk). Strong meaning.
- Elf — melodic, multi-syllable, often end in -iel, -mar, -as.
- Dwarf — short, strong consonants, clan-tied (Thorin, Balin, Dwalin). Clan surname.
- Kenku — onomatopoeic — the sound their voices were stolen to mimic.
- …plus Gnome (cheerful), Halfling (bucolic), Warforged (functional), Tabaxi (totem), etc.
