How Viking names worked
Viking-age Scandinavians used a three-part naming system: a first name (often theophoric — after a god like Þór / Frey / Óðinn), a patronymic (-son / -dóttir formed from the father's first name), and for notable people a byname describing a deed, look or quality (Eric Bloodaxe, Ragnar Loðbrók/"Hairy-Breeches", Harald Fairhair).
Our generator uses authentic Old Norse roots from the Icelandic sagas and modern Iceland's Personal Names Register, transliterated to familiar English spelling. The byname list draws from real historical Vikings plus fantasy inventions that fit the pattern.
